In 1920 a woman is dragged from a canal in Berlin. Before long, rumours begin to spread that she is the Grand Duchess Anastasia, daughter of Tsar Nicolas II, who somehow survived when the Imperial family was massacred by the Bolsheviks in 1918. The arguments for and against the woman’s case are brought to life in this cleverly constructed play, part historical drama, part detective story, as it spans over 50 years.
The Inspector and Mrs Manahan are themselves throughout the play but the rest of the characters, nurses, friends, secretaries, doctors and patients, are played, according to the original script by just one man and one woman. However, Lisa may decide to share these roles out among several actors, depending on who turns up at the audition. Some actors may decide that they would like to be included in the cast but only in one or two minor roles. This can be discussed with Lisa before the casting is finally settled.
